May 18,1980 at 8:31 in the morning in the state of Washington, it was nice and quiet. Suddenly, at 8:32 A.M., the Volcano known as Mount St. Helens erupts. Within seconds, the north side of the mountain caves in. The pressure inside the volcano has been too much for the walls to hold. As the pressure releases, magma shoots upward. This hot liquid rock from deep inside Earth causes an avalanche of rocks, ice, and mud. Large clouds of gas and ash rise above the volcano. Within minutes, clouds of ash surround the area. That makes it impossible to see and it can keep you from breathing. The volcano will continue to ooze out lava for nine more hours. The effect will last for a long time.
Trees and buildings from Mount St. Helen were destroyed. The eruption caused a landslide. Lakes that were nearby were polluted and damaged with ash and mud. A little of people and a lot of animals died. Days later it was 700 degrees below earth’s surface! The ash that fell from the sky turned the sky black as night. Similar to snow the ash covered the ground. A bunch of people had to clean it up. When the air becomes filled with ash people find it hard to breathe. It also harms people’s eyes. The ash from Mount St. Helen shot into the sky rising three times higher than jets fly. The ash did a lot of damage to nearby cities. And that is about Volcanos.
