Diamonds are the most prized gemstone in the whole entire world. A gemstone is a mineral that is very beautiful and gorgeous. Diamonds are the hardest mineral in the whole entire world. Diamonds can’t be scratched unless another diamond scratches it. A diamond can reflect rays of light, it can break light into the colors of the rainbow, this makes all the diamonds sparkle. All diamonds come in different sizes, shapes, and colors, they could be blue, purple, light blue, light purple, pink, red, light pink, light red, and all the other colors. They can be as large as you think they are, this is very rare, and they can be as small as you think they are, this is very common.
Diamonds are made of carbon completely. Diamonds form when carbon is transformed into crystals. This happens when the carbon is under pressure and heat is inside the earth. The carbon atoms are linked in a way that they form really strong molecules, this is what gives diamonds their great hardness. The Moh’s hardness scale is used to measure the hardness of some minerals. When the number is high then that means the mineral is hard, and when the number is low the mineral is soft.
Below earth’s crust there is a thick layer of melted rock, and this layer is called mantle. This is where diamonds are made from. In these days diamonds are formed in the mantle, millions of years ago. Earth’s mantle has a big amount of carbon. Mantle’s heat and pressure is very high, then the heat and pressure turns carbon into diamonds. When this happens melted rock rises up toward the surface, it takes the diamonds with it. Often the melted rock erupts, it erupts through earth’s crust and bring diamonds to earth. When the magma also known as melted rock erupts it cools and hardens, it forms underground carrot – shaped pipes, these pipes are called kimberlite pipes. Then diamonds become trapped inside, some diamonds are trapped on surfaces, others are trapped down deep inside. Diamonds were first discovered in south Africa.
